Because of this, outdoors-people are advised to wear jingle bells on clothing so as to give advance warning to any nearby bears so you don't surprise them.

It's also recommended that anyone frequenting the backcountry carry "Pepper Spray" in case they encounter a bear, to watch for signs of fresh bear activity, and be able to tell the difference between black bear faeces and grizzly bear faeces. Black bear faeces is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur. Grizzly bear droppings have bells in them and smell like pepper.
