Early in January 2024, there was a significant Boeing aviation incident when a door plug blew out of a Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft during Alaska Airlines Flight 1282. The incident occurred on January 5, 2024, shortly after takeoff from Portland International Airport. The aircraft was climbing through about 16,000 feet when a door plug (a panel used in place of an emergency exit door on some configurations) suddenly blew out of the fuselage, leaving a gaping hole in the side of the aircraft. Fortunately, the plane was able to return to Portland and make an emergency landing. There were no serious injuries among the 171 passengers and 6 crew members onboard, despite the cabin undergoing rapid decompression.
The incident came after previous safety issues with the Boeing 737 MAX series, which had been grounded worldwide between 2019 and 2020 following two fatal crashes.
